Billie Eilish, Climate Activist & Changemaker
Ocean eyes?? More like oceans thrive… under Billie’s influence!
When you think of Billie Eilish you probably immediately think of a global sensation who is reshaping the music industry, one soft-spoken lyric at a time. You may not immediately think of everything else that makes up such a talented human – things like her sustainability activism or loud calls-to-action to mitigate environmental injustices. Just because Billie Eilish is a softer singer, does not mean she stays quiet in the face of indifference!
Now, you may be wondering, “What exactly has she done?” I am so glad you asked!
It is evident from her interviews, speeches, and her music that Eilish stands up for what she believes in, whether that’s body positivity, mental health awareness, or (in this case) environmental protection and climate literacy.
Eilish’s efforts have led to her recent acceptance of the Environmental Justice Award at the 2026 MLK Jr. Beloved Community Awards. While accepting her well-deserved award, she made sure the spotlight wasn’t just on her. Eilish shone light on some crucial issues impacting our environmental welfare. Notice how I said “our” – sometimes we need a gentle reminder that the environment includes everybody, not just any one body. This isn’t a selfish mission we’re on… this is a mission with a vision that encompasses everybody, every creature, every ecosystem and every possible outcome that improves quality of life for all. That’s pretty selfless, if you ask me.
Here are some of the concerns Eilish addressed in her speech, and in her ongoing efforts:
Social and Environmental Injustices
Obstruction of civil rights
Depletion of natural environmental resources
Fossil fuel dependency and excessive animal agriculture
Limited access to food and adequate healthcare
Sometimes acknowledgement is all you need to mitigate environmental degradation and to promote awareness. Once one is simply aware, one is exponentially wiser. (I came up with that just now; do you like it?). Now, if that acknowledgement is coming from such an influential voice with so many fans that admire her and consider her a role model, you can imagine the impact that might have on the young – and older, let’s not limit ourselves – minds of the world.
We could all be just a bit wiser if we stop, listen and accept reality for what it is… becoming both self-aware and worldly-aware. You don’t always have to commit to tangible action, sometimes you just need to commit to listening and understanding… or, in Eilish’s case, speaking up. Billie Eilish understands what it means to be sustainable, it’s not just about one thing… it’s about creating a society where we encompass them all – because WE are the environment. She isn’t afraid to say it and encourage others in powerful positions to speak up with her.
I want to briefly outline a few initiatives Eilish has incorporated in her work to continue enacting change and engaging with her growing community.
REVERB – An Eilish Planet Partner
Music Decarbonization Project
Billie Eilish became a Music Decarbonization Project Partner. This project, established by REVERB, aims to drastically reduce, and someday eliminate, the carbon footprint made by the music industry. Their efforts range from using clean energy to power tour transportation, to zero-emission lighting designs on stage, to hybrid solutions for a little renewable acceleration toward the ultimate goal. This project creates the right infrastructure for performers who want to make a positive change in the way they showcase their art.

Visit an Eco-Action Village when you go to a Billie Eilish concert! These villages connect fans to what matters most and provide a community for learning, growing and connecting. The options are limitless there, from networking with environmental organizations, to learning about their mission and signing up to be a part of their vision, to accessibility to refill stations for reusable water bottles. These tiny sustainability “cities” at her events create diverse accessibility for concertgoers to make a change, no matter how big or small that change may be. I mean, beaches had to start somewhere, right? One grain of sand at a time. So, go start your beach… beech!!

Well done, girl! “Happier than ever?” Yes, that is correct, the Earth will be happier than ever if others follow in your footsteps!
We may not be able to make music like her, but we sure can protect the Earth like her!
